Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 1, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Tiri (“Tiri,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the Tiri mobile app, our websites, and related services (together, the “Service”). We’ve tried to keep it plain and honest. If anything is unclear, email us at [email protected].
1. Summary
Here’s the short version. The rest of this policy fills in the detail.
- We collect what we need to run the app and help you learn: your account, your learning progress, your settings, and the messages you send to the AI tutor.
- Tutor messages are processed by Google’s Gemini API to generate a reply. We don’t sell your personal information.
- Subscriptions are handled by the App Store / Google Play and our partner RevenueCat, so we don’t see your full payment-card details.
- You can access or delete your data at any time by emailing us or deleting your account in the app.
2. Information we collect
We collect information in the following categories.
2.1 Information you give us
- Account information. When you create an account, we collect an email address and a securely hashed password, and we may send a verification email to confirm it’s yours. You can browse much of the app before signing in.
- Language profile. The languages you already speak and the language(s) you’re learning. The tutor uses these to explain in languages you know.
- Tutor messages. The questions and messages you send to the in-app AI tutor, and the conversation history we keep so you can pick up where you left off.
- Support communications. If you email us, we keep your message and contact details to respond.
2.2 Information created as you learn
- Learning & progress data. Completed lessons, spaced-repetition review cards and their schedule, grammar reviews, words you’ve seen, streaks, daily goals, and in-app preferences, so we can save your place and sync across your devices.
- Audio playback. The app plays pronunciation audio for words and phrases. This audio is delivered to your device and does not identify you.
2.3 Information collected automatically
- Device & technical data. Device type, operating system and app version, language/locale, and similar technical details needed to deliver the app.
- Diagnostics & logs. Crash reports and basic server request logs (which can include your IP address and timestamps) used to keep the Service secure, reliable, and bug-free.
- Push token. If you enable notifications, a device push token so we can send study reminders you’ve asked for.
2.4 Information from third parties
- Purchase & subscription status. From the App Store, Google Play, and RevenueCat, we receive whether you have an active subscription and related receipt data, not your full payment-card number.
3. How we use information
- Provide, maintain, sync, and improve the Service.
- Save your learning progress and schedule your reviews.
- Power the AI tutor and generate responses to your questions.
- Process subscriptions and verify entitlements.
- Send notifications you’ve enabled, such as study reminders.
- Verify your email and secure your account.
- Diagnose problems, prevent fraud and abuse, and keep the app safe.
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms.
We do not use your personal information to serve third-party advertising, and we do not sell it.
4. Legal bases (EEA/UK users)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on these legal bases to process your information:
- Contract: to provide the Service you’ve signed up for (your account, progress, tutor, and subscriptions).
- Legitimate interests: to keep the Service secure and reliable, prevent abuse, and improve our features, balanced against your rights.
- Consent: for optional features such as push notifications; you can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation: where we must process information to comply with the law.
5. The AI tutor & your messages
The in-app tutor is powered by Google’s Gemini API. When you send a message, we transmit your message along with relevant context (such as the languages you know, the language you’re learning, and the lesson you’re on) to Google so it can generate a response.
- Google processes this data as our service provider to return a reply.
- We rely on Google’s enterprise/API terms, under which prompts sent via the Gemini API are not used to train Google’s models.
- Please don’t share sensitive personal information (financial, health, government IDs, etc.) in tutor conversations; it isn’t needed to learn a language.
- AI responses can be inaccurate; they’re for learning, not professional advice.
6. Service providers & sharing
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only with the service providers below (acting on our instructions), when required by law, in connection with a merger or acquisition, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Tiri and its users.
| Provider | Purpose | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Gemini API) | Powers the in-app AI tutor and generates explanations and replies. | Your tutor messages, the languages you know/are learning, and relevant lesson context. |
| RevenueCat | Manages and validates subscriptions and entitlements. | A pseudonymous app user ID, purchase/receipt data, and subscription status. |
| Apple App Store / Google Play | Processes purchases and recurring billing. | Payment details (handled by the store) and transaction/receipt data. |
| Cloudflare | Hosts our backend and delivers course content and audio. | Account and learning data in transit/at rest, plus standard request logs (e.g. IP address). |
| Expo | App delivery, updates, and push-notification routing. | A push token (if notifications are enabled) and basic delivery diagnostics. |
7. Data stored on your device
Much of Tiri works offline. Course content and your progress are mirrored in local storage on your device (an on-device database and secure preference storage) so the app stays fast and usable without a connection. This local data tolerates older app versions and is removed when you delete the app. Clearing it does not delete data already synced to your account on our servers.
8. International data transfers
We and our service providers may process your information in countries other than where you live, including the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses) for these transfers.
9. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. Tutor conversation history is kept until you delete it or close your account. Diagnostic logs are kept for a limited period for security and debugging. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must retain it to comply with the law, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements.
10. Your rights & choices
- Access & portability. Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction. Ask us to correct inaccurate information, or update much of it directly in the app.
- Deletion. Delete your account from the app’s settings, or email us to request deletion.
- Objection & restriction. Where applicable, object to or ask us to restrict certain processing.
- Notifications. Turn study reminders on or off in your device settings.
- Subscriptions. Manage or cancel in your App Store or Google Play account.
- Withdraw consent. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We’ll verify your request and respond within the time required by law. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
11. U.S. state privacy rights
If you are a resident of California or another U.S. state with a comprehensive privacy law, you may have the right to know, access, correct, and delete your personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. To make a request, contact us at the email above; we will verify and respond as required by applicable law. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf.
12. Children’s privacy
Tiri is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work hard to keep your data safe and to notify you of any material breach as required by law.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
